ASMW – Ice Monster

I came across today’s ASMW group by accident as I was strolling through the recommended list on Amie Street and came across the group Minus the Bear. The song in question, Ice Monster, is a fun little ditty on their album Acoustics and it features a good mix of rhythm and lyrics and is a quality addition to any collection.

I realize I’m a day early (no worries, I’ll do another ASMW post tomorrow) but I wanted to share the amazing voice of this songstress with you today (tuesday). Maria Taylor has the kind of voice that any princess would love to have. From the fun tune of Cartoons and Forever Plans to the nifty beginning of 100,000 times, the lyrics and melody speak to the listener as few do these days. Taylor is a product of Alabama and has several other groups and projects under her belt. This release will quickly become one of your most played.

ASMW – Call me the Crusher!

In honor of the worm of the day, Conficker, I’ve decided that I CRUSH EVERYTHING. Or least, I CRUSH BUGS! This ditty is from Geek turned songster, Jonathan Coulton is pretty upbeat and a good way to wile away the dreary April Fools 2009.

Maybe next time I’ll be smarter then to answer the phone before 8am.

ASMW – Blue Girl

Holy Crap, its time for another Amie Street Music Wednesday. Sorry for falling asleep at the wheel.

I discovered this week’s artist through an email Amie Street was kind enough to send me. Samantha Shelton’s laid back vibe is one I like listening too. Reminds me of some of older classics that I like. Blue Girl has a kind of loungy sound to it that makes it a fun listen and one that demonstrates Shelton’s vocal range pretty well. Give it a listen and let me know what you think of it.

ASMW – Give Grace

In college a good deal of my time was spent writing term papers and essays at 4am on the day they were do. I was hyped up on Mt. Dew and CRANKING the Rusted Root as loud as it could go. This was when they had a very upbeat bohemian vibe to their music. Looking back, its amazing I passed the history classes I did with the grades I did. Its also a good thing that my roommates spent most nights out partying or in Athens with his girlfriend (thanks Toff).

Rusted Root is back with a hot album on Amie Street and the feeling is a little more low key then it was back then, but the music is just as good. Take for instance, this track called Give Grace.

Starts out with a sweet riff on the guitar and then is joined by the rest of the band. The melody and words are nice and simple. “Whatever it is you want, I don’t care about that”. Its a good song about taking chances and being willing to fall (at least thats what I gleaned from the lyrics). I highly recommend this song (indeed the whole album rocks!).

Welcome back Rusted Root. Its been too long.

ASMW – Welcome Back Old Friend…

If you were a purveyor of this site previously (early last year?) you would have noticed my weekly postings on wednesday’s for Amie Street Music Wednesdays. Well, they made some changes to the player at Amie Street, so the old plugin wasn’t working and I wasn’t able to post. Until now.

The Code has been updated and is now easier to add the player to your site.

In honor of that, here’s Skeleton Boy from Friendly Fires. Have a listen and enjoy.

Are you a Pirate?

If you’ve been living under a rock lately (the past month) you might have missed the fact that The Pirate Bay has been on trial in Sweden for Copy Right infringement. The Pirate Bay trial brings up some interesting questions, but perhaps the one thats most important to my is whether or not a Bittorrent Tracker should be responsible for the content that is being tracked.

For instance, I run Linuxtracker.org one of the largest Linux Torrent Trackers on line. We do not host any distributions. We do not provide the actual iso’s or zip files for download from our server, we merely host the torrent files that allow people to connect to one another for sharing and downloading the files. Another interesting thing is that Recording Industry Associations across europe are beginning to pressure ISP (Internet Service Providers) in to blocking the Bittorrent protocol and other file sharing protocols on their networks.

This could be a bad thing for Linuxtracker and other Legitimate torrent sites like the The Norwegian State TV which is launching their own tracker to serve up their shows (which is a really cool move). I haven’t run across anyone completely blocking the torrent protocol yet, but if I do, I’ll be sure to post it.

I’m curious though, how many people are grabbing their shows/music/movies/apps via torrent as opposed to watching them in Hulu, the channel’s site or buying them outright? I tend to grab shows, but I’ve stopped downloading movies, I have little time to watch DVD’s, let alone movies I have to wait to download and as most of the work on my computer is done on a work laptop, I tend to buy my software as well…. what about you?

Everyonce in a while an artist or group comes along that offers something different yet the same. Enter Phonograph. Their sound reminds me of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers which isn’t a bad thing at all. Its got some nice rock undertones to it and listening to the Phonographs is an audiophile’s pleasure.

Kid Songs

Well, not your normal Kid songs anyways. One of my perennial favorites, Barenaked Ladies decided that they were of the age where it would be appropriate for them to put out a kids album (as they almost all have kids). Instead of releasing old classics like their christmas album, they came up with their own songs for the childrens CD and boy is it unique.

From songs about ninjas to food parties to geese, there’s even a new ABC song that uses words like Czar and llamadamadingdong. Try teaching that to your four year old!

The only thing missing as far as I’m concerned is the rendition of “the other day” that they’ve been playing on XM kids (116), otherwise this album is a fun, light hearted take on childrens albums and right up any BNL fan’s alley.

All for You

Its 1997. I’m on the quad at Oxford College of Emory University in wonderful Oxford, GA and a little known band making the rounds of college campuses is busy playing. The music sounded a lot like hootie and the blowfish, but a little closer to our age. It was cool and I was introduced to Sister Hazel.

All for you was their big radio hit that following year. People everywhere could be heard humming the chorus (and really, who could blame them?) and now, you can download it to your ipod for as little as 99 cents. What could be better? Well, not having to work for a living, but other wise, nothing. Absolutely, nothing.
