Its a Pandemic

II actually. I was out browsing the intarweb this morning as I happen to do cause I’m good like that, and I came across a Post @ Cromely’s World (which is a good source of world view from Seattle) on an online flash game I never heard of before: Pandemic II. I had played Desktop Tower Defense before, but this posed a new challenge. According to the site: “Customize your disease and wipe out the population!”
Thats pretty much all there is to the game but its a fun, unnerving challenge. They have a tutorial in the game itself, but I just jumped right in first thing this morning. It isn’t like getting a life insurance quote, there’s little to know other then where the reset button is right? But once I started playing, I was on a quest to wipe out the world with my imaginary virus named Emma (after my youngest).
It takes a little figuring out what to go after first. Do I work on the transmission routes, or its resistance to heat, cold, water or drugs, or do I make it evolve in to something that will blind you and cause you to hemorrhage? It really is a strategy game. The game itself is different every time I play it (no matter how I play it) and it offers three version, Virus, Bacteria and Parasite. Parasite being by far the hardest one to play. I will admit, there is a little bit of glee deep inside whenever I see that a country has been declared dead…
If you’re looking for a good waste of time, seriously check out Pandemic II and let me know what you think.

Coincidentally, I found Pandemic II at bored.com recently, and my BF & I ended up playing it repeatedly for a couple of weeks. It’s infuriating! Neither of us has won the game, but we both eventually had to walk away from it because it was just eating up all our time! It seems that Madagascar is the most disease-resistant island in the universe… close their ports at the first sign of trouble.

Thanks for the shout. I’m glad you’re getting a kick out of the game.
I haven’t won a game yet, but that hasn’t stopped me from trying. I think the trick is to do very little to evolve the disease — keep a low profile until you get Madagascar infected. Then spend the points.
As flash games go, this one definitely has me thinking more about what it models than a Tower Defence game does.
Cromely’s last blog post..SAGE!
