Convert Video like a Pirate!

pirate_jack_rackham I’ve been looking for a good way to get videos (movies, dvd’s, tv shows) on my blackberry bold (I have an 8gb memory card) to make use of the space and the amazing screen on this device, plus it’d be nice to have something to watch on road trips, waiting at the doctor office, when I’m supposed to be working. You get the point.

I’ve tried Handbrake, and it works ok, but it is more of an iPhone/Pod/Touch centered app and there are some configs that have to be done in order to get it to convert properly for the bold. I’ve tried some professional (for money) converters and they all work, but I still end up having to do a lot of tweaking. Plus, many of them are for either video files or dvd only. Its hard to find one program that does it all. Until Now.

vioEnter the awesome guys from ThePirateBay (yes, the bittorrent site). They’ve created this masterpiece called VIO Mobile Video Converter. This thing is geared specifically for converting video to a mobile format (for the iphone, ipod and blackberry devices) and it kicks ass.

Using it is fairly straight forward, you DOWNLOAD the installer and install it. I went ahead and installed their tool bar, it installs in IE and I use firefox so I almost never see it. Once installed, you fire it up, select the device (in my case the blackberry bold 9000) and then browse for my movie file. You can edit the settings or use the defaults (which work well in most cases). I did change the quality from good to full quality, it takes a little more space, but the quality is as good as you would get from watching it on your computer. Hit convert video and let it do its job.

Its not the slowest software out there, but of course, speed depends on your system. Once its done, they even walk you through transferring it to your device. Pretty simple. I highly recommend checking it out. If you do let me know what you think.

it looks pretty slick. have you tired with different source files and qualities yet?

I noticed that it boasts ” converts all AVI, MPEG, MP4 video”… You know what *that* means!
