A western with a twist

firefly Its sad when really good TV never gets a chance to realize its full potential. I was watching tv late last night as I waited for one of the puppies to return home from a walkabout and as I surfed the comcast channel guide, I came across the SciFi network which was running episodes of the cult hit FireFly from 11pm until 3am. I didn’t stay up until 3 (knowing full well that the girls would be up around 7:30) but I did catch the two pilot episodes which reminded me why I loved this show in the first place.

If you’ve never heard of FireFly or Serenity, you’re probably scratching your head. FireFly is set in the future, where the world has a largely Asian (chinese) influence (which isn’t hard to imagine when looking at population numbers) and has a really nice western feel to it. The cast on FireFly worked well together and the show just had a really good fit that made it a somewhat believable SciFi show.

Created by Joss Whedon (of Buffy and Angel fame) the show only lasted one season on Fox, but it managed to find a HUGE cult following and even spawned a movie based on the name of the ship, Serenity. The movie was just as good as the show. If you haven’t caught and episode yet, I highly suggest you keep an eye on the SciFi lineup to find out when it comes on.

Take my love, take my land
Take me where I cannot stand
I don’t care, I’m still free
You can’t take the sky from me
Take me out to the black
Tell them I ain’t comin’ back
Burn the land and boil the sea
You can’t take the sky from me
There’s no place I can be
Since I found Serenity
But you can’t take the sky from me…

I *ahem* acquired all the eps. I’m a huge Joss fan so I had to, but I haven’t watched yet. I’m a bit confused about the order some of the eps go in ’cause I’ve been reading two different things, but I think after Christmas I’m just going to dive in and hope for the best!

With the amount of programmes that get a 2nd series, it’s shocking that Firefly just stopped. It was great to see Serenity at the cinema. If there ever was a 2nd series, surely the budget would be high on reputation only.

I was never in to Buffy, Angel, et al. But Joss Whedon is a genius.

It seems like the really good shows, unless they get a huge-ass cult base right away, won’t last. But the cheesy stuff that you could have sworn you saw before under a different name with a different lineup will last. Go figure.

I have discovered quite a few shows lately through friends that I never would have come across because they’re on at odd times and unpopular channels. It is sad, considering some of the most popular shows on the popular channels suck so much more.

One of the shows I love is called Aliens in America. It’s hilarious and really intelligent and touching. It’s about a Muslim exchange student living with an American family in a small town.

I have “Firefly” and “Serenity” … That was a really cute show, and I’m not at all into sci-fi (space travely shows). I loved Buffy and Angel though. So many people like the show, it was a GOOD show. I agree with Steve, it really is weird how many shows on air are le’suck that just go on forever.
