I’ve talked about Alzheimer’s several times on here (its a disease that’s hit close to home with two of my grandparents) because I feel its important that everyone know as much as possible about it. Its a disease that will affect someone you know, love or maybe even you one day whether you want it to or not. The Alzheimer’s Foundation has teamed up with the Dementia Care Professionals of America to produce a dvd for family and professionals a like that helps introduce you to the disease and walk you through the principles of safe home care for family suffering from Az and Dementia.
I was quite pleased with the dvd when it arrived, its not the most exciting material one could hope for, but it is well put together and laid on out a way that makes it easy to glean information about Alzheimer's from the disc in a way everyone can use. Broken in to four different sections, the DVD covers:
- Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia - An introduction to the disease and how it affects us and those we love.
- Principles of Personal Care - Talking about the daily stuff (eating, dressing, etc…) and how its important to help those with dementia.
- Behavioral Management - Covers ways to control odd or disruptive behavior (waking at night, wandering around the house…)
- Safe Home Care - Walks you through making the home a safer place for the one suffering from Az or Dementia.
Some of the information included in the dvd is fairly obvious once you hear it, but if you haven’t experienced it first hand, its good to hear about it from an outside source. Its important that we continue to look for a cure to Alzheimer’s but its equally important that we take the proper care of those suffering from it (remember, one day it could be you). Its hard around the Holidays to take care of those we love in this state.
I found that a good way to honor those we love who are suffering (or have suffered) at this time of year is by donating to the Alzheimer’s Foundation. The simple holiday gift of a couple of dollars can go a long way towards finding a cure for Alzheimer’s.
If you know someone suffering from Az or Dementia, check the Alzheimer's store for items that will help make it easier to care for those you love or the Alzheimer's Foundation site for more information.
