w00t! The Guys at gmail announced on the Gmail Blog that they’re in the process of rolling out Imap support to all gmail users. FREE (as in beer!) This is cool if you use multiple devices to check your mail. Now you can have it look the same across everything.
In the words of David Murray (an assistant product manager with a fetish for Xena: Warrior Princess):
I can:
- read an email in Gmail, then
- move it to the “Starred” folder on my iPhone, then
- archive it by moving it to “All Mail” in Thunderbird, then
- see all of those changes on my Blackberry (or any of the above devices for that matter).
For those of us with smartphones, this is a good step. Actually for any user who checks their gmail from an outside email client this is a good step. It’ll be interesting to see how well it works with labels though. As for me, I’ll continue to use outlook to sync my gmail with my exchange server.

I just check my email on the computer since Verizon charges an arm and a leg to have internet access put on your phone.
But, it’s great that the feature will be there soon and that it’s free. Free is always good…so long as the quality isn’t cheap.

Imap makes it nice though for people who want to use an outside client (outlook, thunderbird, entourage) to check their email and not a web browser.
Though, there are apparently some issues with the labeling setup they use instead of folders…

I don’t have a cellphone let alone one that actually will check my email
I don’t need one at the moment. But I think that it is a really good step for Google to allow you to check your email from your cellphone and for free. That’s why I like Google..I don’t think I could boycott it like what is going on right now with some people! Just call me the Google Cheerleader! Where’s my pom poms?

Ah, well I gave up using those clients as well. I used Microsoft Office for a bit, didn’t like it. Used Firebird, loved it, but in the end I just usually sign in to the sites individually. *shrugs* I’m the odd one I suppose.
