Improving your About Page!

There’s a really good article on improving your About Page and its importance in increasing the credibility (and there by increasing the readership) of your blog.

The article had several good points such as adding a picture to the about page:

I know it seems odd, but if the blog is about you, or one specific product, for example the Nintendo Wii, it doesn’t hurt to put up a picture of yourself or that product. When it is your picture you are putting up, the image can help you in creating branding

It makes sense. Its like adding nice cabinet hardware to your kitchen cabinets to spice it up. Plus, the photo on your about page helps your readers view you more as a real person as opposed to some mind numbing twat who rants about the jackass at the stop light this morning (or your boss’s pointless requests).

Some of the other suggestions include stating a purpose, writing with power (feeling), infusing your personality to the about page. It shouldn’t be a resume. If people want that, give them a link to your CV (thats for you brits), instead make it fun and interesting. Also, its a good place to provide a list of some of your better or more popular posts.

If done right, the About Page can be one of your best traffic boosting pages.

I fought adding a picture for a long time. I finally did. I guess I felt more anonymous without the picture.

You know for the longest time I had pictures all throughout my about me page. I figured people did not want to read my long boring story so I added pictures with it to make it easier on them. I have since then taken my about me page down. I don’t know why. But, I have been toying with the idea of putting it back up. Maybe I’ll look into that site and see what it has to say abuot it ;)

I have a tiny little blurb on my personal blog on the lefthand side with a picture and information on me that leads to a more in-depth profile. I did this since I already have a personal site and didn’t see the point in making an about page for myself for my blog since it’s attached to the personal site.

However, I did make an about page (after a suggestion from a reader) on my book blog and I noticed a marked difference. Just by putting a picture, a little about myself and the books I plan on reading and have I gained a sort of “credibility” with my audience. I was no longer a faceless entity but a person. I started receiving email asking about my tastes and giving suggestions. Then of course the authors started contacting me and sending me their books for review. So an about page really does add something to a blog.
