Thursday Thirteen #7

Thirteen things to do in order to generate traffic for your blog!
In no particular order…

  1. LISTS! People love lists and they like to read lists for some reason. Create a list (no more than 10 items) such as 10 good linux distributions or 5 tricks for windowsXP. People love that!
  2. Join BlogRush. While they claim the traffic to your site will be huge, it returns moderate traffic that acually seems to stick around.
  3. Post on forums. Join a couple of forums that you’re interested in (webmaster, seo forums…) and put your url in your signature. Then, be a productive member of the forum community. Don’t be a dick.
  4. Write about Current Political Events. We’re coming in to the 2008 presidential election. News of what the candidates abounds and chances are you like one of them. Write about the candidate you like. Talk smack about the ones you don’t. The search engines will pick it up and you’ll get more traffic from those posts alone!
  5. Join MyBlogLog and BlogCatalog. These are two of the best around. Traffic from them is nice too and the people tend to comment.
  6. Find a couple of other blogs that match yours. Start reading them regularly and become a frequent commenter. Chances are, the owner of the other blog will do the same and comment on your site too.
  7. Sign up for a Paid Blogging Program not only can you make money blogging but you can increase search traffic and gain new ideas for posts. Chances are they have something on there to blog about that you like or use and would not have thought about otherwise…
  8. Join a meme like Thursday Thirteen or Amie Street Wednesday. Two good ways to meet other bloggers and generate traffic and posts.
  9. Sponsor a Contest! While raffles aren’t kosher on blogs (so it seems) contests of other sorts are. Sponsor a link back contest (have your readers linkback to your post via a trackback and then award a cash or other prize to one of the blogs). People like that sort of thing. Another way to do it is to award reviews of other sites on your site.
  10. Spam sites like Facebook and MySpace. I don’t really like this method, but some do and it works for some.
  11. Use Digg, Thoof, redit, stumbleupon or any of the other sites like that to help get your posts out there.
  12. Set your blog as the home page on any computer you come in contact with (at school, the library, your friend’s house)
  13. There’s always Google Adwords. Though, paid advertising for a general blog seems a little over the top. I could see it if you were starting the next TechCrunch but for a blog about your cat?

Those are excellent and I especially appreciate being turned on to Blog Rush (which I didn’t know). My colleague did a post on making t13 more productive for other thirteeners (and encouraging them to comment by including links).

What I don’t understand is why somebody wants so many much people reading their blags.
