Happy Birthday

Fifty years ago this week (october 4th, 1957 to be exact) the soviets launched an ICBM in to space with a satalite (sputnik) spurring the US in to action. this eventually led to the creation of ARPA, the Internet Processing Techniques Office, the GUI, ARPANet and what eventually became known as the internet. Who could have imagined that such an event would lead to spam, online addiction treatment, email, viral videos (did you see the eh marine video?!?!?) and more? God Bless you sputnik and happy 50th birthday.

Paradise Found?

Amy and I love to go to the beach. We took a Western Caribbean cruise earlier this summer and loved it. We’d go back to Grand Cayman in a minute if we could right now. The one we haven’t done yet is a hawaiian vacation. I think we might wait to do this until the girls are a little bigger and we can take the whole family to experience the tropical wonders of the islands (I was 12 when I went).

From looking at it, getting a condo with room for four, a fridge and a kitchenette would be a good way to do it. Such as this one on Kauai. Gorgeous views, nice rooms and its pretty decently priced (though its a shame Airtran doesn’t fly to Hawaii). It couldn’t be easier to find a good condo either than it is on AlohaCondos. Click the destination and you’re presented with the different options. From hotel rooms to condos themselves.

When my parents took us to Hawaii, we stayed in hotels on Kauai and Oahu and a condo on Maui and the condo on Maui was great. It was on the beach, we could have breakfast and hit the water, come back for lunch and go right back out. Very, very convenient and the best way to stay in paradise!

Leave Him Alone

An 85 year old Georgia man is being (for lack of a better word) harassed for something that happened over 60 years ago. Paul Henss is accused of being a World War II concentration camp guard. According to news reports:

Paul Henss, 85, served as a prison guard and attack dog handler at the notorious Dachau and Buchenwald Concentration Camps in Nazi Germany

First of all, I didn’t know that there was a special “elite Nazi tracking force” in the US Justice Department, nor do I think there should be. Part of the problem is that people do not know when to stop. The man is 85 years old. Its clear from his responses to the reporter that he honestly has no idea whats going on these days. The fact that they want to persecute some one his age is a little absurd. The “crimes against humanity” that he allegedly committed happened 60 years ago and while I abhor what happened in Germany in the 1940’s, I would think that our government could put their resources to better use these days then tracking down senile 85 year old Germans.

Secondly, he has to go to court over all of this. The chances that he gets a swift and speedy hearing are laughable as well. He may well spend the rest of his life (whether or not its 1, 5, 10 or 15 years) waiting to get his name cleared. I think what needs to be done in this case is every one needs to sit down and take a look at things. Mr. Henss has been, from what I can tell, a productive member of society since he came to the US in the 1950’s. He hasn’t harmed anyone. He doesn’t train dogs to attack people and he certainly isn’t trying to reform the Third Reich in his basement (is he?). His neighbors say he is a nice old man. can’t we just leave him alone and focus on more pressing issues?

Give a Gift

Looking for that unique gift for a grandparent but you don’t know what style purse or golf club cover they need this year? Why not give a personalized gift card? The ultimate in Gift Ideas, giftcardlab.com allows you to upload your own photos, designs, whatever to their site to have a gift card printed for the one you love (or maybe, you want to upload a photo of a pile of poo and send it to someone you don’t like but *HAVE* to send a gift to…).

The site isn’t officially ready for business yet, they start in November, however, you can enter your designs now for a chance to win up to $5,000 in prizes before the season officially starts off. Personally, I think it’d be fairly cool to receive a giftcard with my daughters on it.
