So this is America (last time I checked anyway) and while we haven’t officially declared English the official language of the USA, it has been spoken here well, since the country was started. There’s a sandwich shop in Philly thats receiving more attention than usual (its generally just been a stop on the campaign trail for most presidential candidates) for a sign that was posted last year by the owner:
This is America. When Ordering Please Speak English
Personally I see nothing wrong with this. The store is the property of Joe Vento and if Mr. Vento wants to only serve English Speaking customers, he should have that right. There’s supposed to be a hearing sometime this month on the legality of the sign but from where I sit, there’s no question. The sign should stay. Its enough that there are bi-lingual signs in most of the major retailers (ever been to a Home Depot?) and on most of the major products, there are at least TWO languages when it comes to the instructions.
The new problems arise though, because it is a popular stop on the campaign trail. To the candidates who stop there, I say well done. Now, lets put that sign up along our borders and at our international airports… ![]()
