I started backpacking when I was about 11. I got my first (and so far only…) pair of real hiking boots when I was fourteen. A pair of vasque sundowners that have been resoled once so far and are approaching the end of their life (almost 20 years of use!) but the pair I remember most is my father’s pair of Danner boots.
He had a pair of leather danner boots that he took the best care of (watching him take care of his Danner boots is how I learned to take care of my own boots). Making sure the leather was nik-waxed before every trip, cleaned, dried. They lasted him almost as long as mine have lasted, though he opted not to get them resoled, he bought a new pair of Danners because he knows from experience the quality that goes in to a pair of their boots.
Its funny the memories we remember, isn’t it?

That’s funny cause I just bought a pair of boots this weekend.
When it started getting chilly out, I realized that I don’t have much in the way of footwear for the winter. I have tons of sandals and a pair of sneakers - not much else. So, this weekend we went shoe shopping and I came upon a pair of Dr. Martens combat boots. I got hit hard with nostalgia. I had a pair of those for many years as a teen.
The price tag was high, as expected, but I couldn’t help myself. I’ve been breaking them in all day today.

Yea, I think I have three pairs of shoes currently and a pair of sandals (my good work shoes, a pair of tennis shoes for yard work and my boots). I’ll never get rid of my boots!
