Google Buzz

There’s a new stream of virus’ going around ye’ old net trying to infect unsuspecting people. I came across it at work yesterday. Symptoms include constant rebooting. If you think you have this, when you boot windowsXP hit the f8 and select the option that says do not reboot upon system error (or something like that). When the system crashes, you’ll end up with a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) that actually has some good information on it. What you’re looking for is a message about spooldr.sys. If you have that, you’re infected.

“But how?!?!?” you gasp in horror? Well, its apparently being sent around the web in the form of an email greeting card or other crafty disguise for example:

Greetings,

Are you ready to have fun at Web Joker.

Web Joker

I actually received a couple of these last week, but as I didn’t remember signing up for “Web Joker” I deleted them right away. A good rule of thumb is never click anything with IP addresses in the body  Another form as I said, is being sent as an e-greeting card. If you get anything from a source you do not know, don’t open it.

adaware picked up on it right away once I was able to get the box up enough to run, however both Mischel internet Security and PC HELL have ways posted online to correct the issue. Please be careful when dealing with this and remember its often a good idea to just delete mail like this (let your friends know you won’t open it…)

Quick note to add that spooldr should not be confused with “spoolsv” in the applications list in windows. Spoolsv is a running task for printers and the like!

I’ve gotten… Gosh, hundreds of those virus emails this week. Really, really clever. I have to hand it to those sneaky virus creators. Meanies, though.

Yea, its kind of a pain though. I will say, most of the spam and junk filters are doing good to catch it… :)
