Finding a better Vista

Microsoft has released two Vista update packs for “compatibility and reliability” and “performance and reliability”. The highlights: the first promises faster file transfer of large files, working hibernate, and more video card support, while the second improves memory management. Good chance you can expect these to be rolled into the first Service Pack for Vista, whenever that’s released.

Thoof? Thoof.

Digg’s got some new competition in the online community news business and its not /. . (is that right, should I add the extra dot?) New comer to the scene Thoof is promising to deliver personalized news in a clear and concise way letting you vote on articles to determine their popularity and while not all the stuff posted to thoof is not exactly “news” it does offer a nice and refreshing take on the net.

Drawing on a simple and easy to follow layout, thoof’s green pages are a pleasure to view and easy to read. No ad’s on the site so far, so it will be interesting to see how they plan to make money (lets face it, everyone online is looking to get rich…), maybe they plan to add ads (heh). Users can submit links to their own articles or to articles they like online. The article info contains just enough to draw you in to clicking the link. You can hide the link, or approve the link. Articles that are published on Thoof, can sport the thoof badge, similar to the Digg Badge for articles, but this one shows your thoof rank (a percentage).

I think thoof actually has a lot of potential, however there’s a lot of competition out there with Digg, /.’s new “firehose” and reditt. If thoof can hang in there (and I hope they can) they have a hit on their hands. Its interesting to see how all this consumer driven news is affecting people.

Sabayon 3.4 - Through the Looking Glass

I first tried Sabayon Linux in the 3.2 edition and I was plesantly surprised. It found my wireless card, worked well with everything on my box, but it had a few kinks and oddities that they seem to have worked out. Needless to say, despite my dependency on Windows at work, I still like to have the ability to boot in to linux when I can, so I decided to give Sabayon 3.4 a try.

I was pleasantly surprised once again. I downloaded the Sabayon 3.4 Dvd, burned it and fired it up. The first time through I went through a normal boot, and once I was in to Sabayon (it took a minute or two as it worked out what it needed to configure), I was in a stock Sabayon install with out compiz fusion. I attempted to install from the live cd and I had no keyboard. Determined not to let that ruin my day, I rebooted the system (power button) and booted in to the Graphical Installer (you can see screenshots HERE).

The GI is headed by fluxbox, which for what it needs to do is good, it configures your internet access so you can browse the web while you install and it took maybe an hour to get every thing (including the kitchen sink) installed and configured. Upon first boot, it took a bit of time to configure everything as well, however if you’ve ever installed Vista, then this time is normal :) . The system worked out of the box. Sound, wireless, network, dvds, everything was working except Compiz Fusion. This is a must for me these days as I like eye candy and linux is actually ahead of Vista in this area.

It was a simple matter of enabling acceleration for my card and rebooting (I could have restarted X, but I feel a good reboot is better) and I was off and running with compiz. I have to say, they’ve done a nice job with the look and feel of sabayon. The kde menus are nice and they way they operate flawless. The selection of programs provided is abundant and they supply everything you could need on a linux box, including a plethora of games (most of which I have never heard of!). The system works. After a week of using Sabayon, I haven’t found very many things I dislike about it and I’m glad to say that I think I’m going to be using it a little more often.

I’d love to hear what you think about sabayon if you’ve tried it, please remember I am not tech support for the distro, if you have a specific question, I’ll try, but you should really check out their forums.

Scary Movies frighten me!

I am not a fan of scary movies. Something about them always gives me goosebumps. My favorite horror flick at the moment is House on Haunted Hill (with Geoffrey Rush). We don’t tend to watch too many of them as we have young children and Amy is generally afraid of anything in the dark (she doesn’t like trees at night…) however, Halloween the movie might be one I have to go see.

Rob Zombie directs the latest in the Mike Myers saga in which Myers returns to his hometown after being locked in a mental institution for 17 years where as in House on Haunted Hill, they’re spending the night in a haunted mental institution… kind of a switch for once. This is the 9th movie in the Halloween series and it should be a good one if Zombie has anything to do with it. I’m going to bet that Rob will bring his usual twisted vision to the movie which will do nothing but excite fans of the Halloween franchise.

The cast is pretty good and the movie is looking to be fairly chilling as well. Take a look at the trailer:

Halloween the movie is definately one horror flick worth checking out!
