Things I learned as tech support

I came across this list of 20 things I learned as tech support and I have to say, I agree with most of them (as I worked tech support for a web hosting company for three years). It was always my goal to kill ‘em with kindness.

apt-get install ACKKK!!!

So I had an issue with apt-get the other night on the very server this site resides on that took me a while to work out. There were two packages (I want to say debianutils and passwd) that were both trying to install adduser (or useradd) and the debianutils kept erroring out. Well, this wouldn’t have been an issue, except I was attempting to do an apt-get dist-upgrade. I’ve had issues before with apt-get (it removed my kernel once and my host said the box would have to be reinstalled from scratch, but it was no match for my kung-foo) so I’m a little leery of it as it is (I’m a ./compile && make && make install kind of guy).

This time was no different. I couldn’t fathom why it wouldn’t just install one and then install the other. I had to find a way around it and luckily I was able to. Here’s what I did…

#dpkg-reconfigure base-files
#dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/debianutils_2.23.1_i386.deb
NOTE: You really shouldn’t FORCE dpkg or apt to do anything as it could really mess the system up yo!
# dpkg –configure -a
#apt-get dist-upgrade
#reboot

Of course, something else went wrong and removed all of my users (because I had them all set to the same UID so the system saw a problem in that there was really only one user and decided to fix it…) except root, which couldn’t login via ssh as I had disabled root login in sshd…. but that was easily fixed by my host (who have been superb lately…)

Any who, if you decide to try and mess up your system, do so at your own risk!

Vacay Rocks!

We like to take family vacations. They’re getting a little easier now that Emmmms is getting bigger and can eat more things than just mashed mush. One of our favorite vacations is a trip to Mexico Beach, Fl. We go down there at least once a summer to dog sit for a friend of ours (she just happens to be a block off the beach!), relax, eat some good food and play with Ella, a nice Mastive (BIG DOG!). The girls like it because we can go to the beach when we want, or head in to the near by towns for some shopping, or just relax on the porch listening to the waves. Amy and I like it because unlike at a hotel, we have access to a washing machine, we have our own space and we can cook in the kitchen or just relax as though we were at home.

In looking to plan another trip to the beach, I came across a cool tool, vacation rentals by owner, VLBO.com. VLBO is a site where owners and renters can hook up, share the perfect rental unit or find it and the best part is they cover the entire country! Any where in the USA, you can find vacation rentals as easy as clicking on a state. Want to go to Montana? Click Montana and you can see everything available. Most listings have photos and can put you directly in contact with the owner. It couldn’t be easier. Could it?

If you’re an owner, VLBO.com makes it easy for you to list your rental as well. For 99$ a year you can list your property. You’re given a login and you can update your property, add photos or other information when ever you like. Easy as logging in to a web site.

Vacations are a good way to get away from the humdrum of every day life, finding a good rental property will help make memories your family will have forever.

Coolest Club online

As a parent, I’m always looking for safe things my daughter can do online that will help her learn the computer skills she needs to make it today. Lets face it, when I was a kid computers were rare (we had one because dad worked for IBM) and the opportunities to use them were even rarer (does anyone else remember Tink Tonk?? I used to love that game!).

Todays kids are lucky, there lurks around every corner a world of electronic fun, but the problem is how to make it fun and safe. Well, leave it to Disney to buy (they bought these guys recently for a nice chunk of change) one of the best things on line for the younger crowd, Club Penguin. Following on the heals of the popular run of Penguin movies lately, this fun online “myspace for the younger crowd” is set around penguins. As the site says “Club Penguin is a kid-friendly virtual world where children can play games, have fun and interact with each other” and boy do they deliver.

Members are able to create their own penguins in kind of a virtual wonderland of penguinocity and they can interact with other penguins and make friends exploring the arctic. Its actually a very cool (pardon the pun) online tool for your kids and its a good way to help them learn about internet safety as well.

Upgrading the Kitchen

We’re in the process of redoing our kitchen (the strawberry wall paper is coming down!!) and in doing so I’ve been looking for ways to spruce it up. We’re having it painted next week, then we’ll do floors, then cabinets and counters. In looking for things to make the kitchen nicer, I’ve come across an awesome site for bathroom and kitchen fixer-uppers… Taps4Less.

If you have ever wanted the coolest faucet for your bathroom, or the best disposal for your kitchen, your search will stop at Taps4Less. They have everything (even saunas!) you need for remodeling your bathroom or kitchen sink (including the sink!). Stovetops (work spaces), sinks, more faucets than I could have imagined, disposals and more, they really do have it all.

The site is laid out well and customer service is outstanding. I’m not sure if they deliver to the US, but they do offer free delivery to the mainland UK. All prices are in British pounds. If you were going to remodel your bathroom or kitchen, I’d definitely check out Taps4Less even if its just to get ideas.
